Christmas is the most wonderful time of year, but it can also get a little hectic. There’s so much to do, from shopping and decorating to baking and entertaining. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and stressed out!
This magical season only comes once a year and we want you to fully enjoy it without (too much) rushing around. We’ve compiled several tips for navigating the holidays with ease and even have some free printables to help you get started!
Why Does Christmas Get So Hectic?
Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, but for many people, it can also be a time of stress and overwhelm. There’s so much to do, from shopping and decorating to baking and entertaining. But why does Christmas get so hectic?
There’s a lot of pressure to create a “perfect” Christmas. We see all these perfect images of Christmas on social media and in movies, and it can be hard not to compare ourselves.
We feel like we have to do everything ourselves. We want to make all the food, put up all the decorations, and buy the perfect gifts for everyone. This can be a lot of work, especially if you have a big family or friend group.
We’re busy with other things during the holiday season. Many people are working full-time and have children in school, so it can be hard to find time to do all the Christmas planning and preparation.
There’s a lot of financial pressure during the holidays. We want to buy gifts for everyone, but we also don’t want to go over budget. This can be stressful, especially if you’re already struggling financially.
How to Prevent Feeling Overwhelmed
Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience, especially during the holiday season. There’s so much to do and it can be hard to keep up with everything. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry, you’re not alone!
Plan ahead. The earlier you start planning, the less stressed you’ll be later on. Make a list of everything you need to do, and start working on it one task at a time.
Set realistic expectations. You don’t have to do everything. It’s okay to let some things go. Focus on the things that are most important to you and your family.
Break down larger tasks. “Decorate the house” sounds pretty straightforward, but even the simplest of tasks can oftentimes need to be broken down into something more manageable. “Decorate the house” could actually include tidying up rooms, planning layouts, retrieving decorations from a storage area, and gathering supplies (hooks, extension cords, tools, etc.) Allow yourself plenty of time for each smaller task and rack up those small wins to keep you motivated!
Delegate tasks. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your family and friends. They’re probably happy to help out and join the Christmas festivities! Maybe their decorative touches won’t quite be what you had in mind, but try to let go of perfection and enjoy the process.
Enjoy the moment. It’s important to take some time for yourself during the holidays. Make sure you’re pausing at least once a day to write in a gratitude journal, reach out to a loved one, and jot down memories. This is also a great time to catch up with an old friend over coffee or join a local volunteer effort.
Address cards early. Christmas cards are most commonly mailed out the first week of December. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t sit down on a cozy mid-November (or sooner) weekend and start adding personal messages to cards and addressing envelopes ahead of time.
Add to cart. We all know how crowded grocery stores are the closer we get to Christmas, and with grocery pick-up and delivery we can pretty much avoid going inside altogether now. But once you’ve got your Christmas menu and ingredients planned out, go ahead and add those items to a list or cart to save for later.
Canned foods, spices, and baking supplies can be purchased way ahead of time and set aside for added peace of mind. We love crossing off to-do list items, no matter how small!
